What Hestia Control Panel gives you on a small server

Hestia Control Panel is a free GPLv3 hosting panel built on the VestaCP codebase and carried forward where VestaCP stopped. Nginx and Apache with PHP-FPM serve the sites while Bind handles DNS with clustering. The mail side arrives complete with Roundcube, SpamAssassin and ClamAV. Databases run on MariaDB, MySQL or PostgreSQL, with Let's Encrypt issuing wildcard certificates from inside the panel.

What separates it from the other free panels is how little it needs. One core and a gigabyte is a real minimum rather than an optimistic one, which matters a great deal when the panel is competing with the sites for the same memory. The project also asks for KVM or LXC virtualisation and warns against OpenVZ, so a cheap container VPS is the wrong home for it. Every plan here runs on KVM.

VestaCP stopped receiving attention some years ago, which leaves anyone still on it running unmaintained software with a mail server attached. Hestia grew out of the same codebase, so the concepts and much of the layout carry over and the relearning is minimal.

On a small server the panel and the websites draw from the same gigabyte. Hestia is built to take as little of it as possible, which is why it suits a single modest VPS better than the heavier alternatives do.

Both are free and both cover the same ground. CyberPanel is the faster of the two for WordPress, since OpenLiteSpeed and LiteSpeed Cache handle caching at the web server. Hestia is the lighter one. It's the better pick when the server is small, or when the stack is Nginx and Apache rather than LiteSpeed.

Bind is included rather than bolted on, so zones live beside the sites they serve and a second Hestia server can mirror them. That is enough to run your own nameservers without paying for a DNS service.

The mail stack is complete on install, with Roundcube, spam filtering and antivirus. One thing to plan around: outbound port 25 stays closed for the first 31 days on a new account and opens after that on request. Relaying through an external provider on port 587 works from day one.

Why Hestia Control Panel runs well on LumaDock

KVM, which is what the project asks for

Hestia's own requirements name KVM or LXC and advise against OpenVZ, where shared kernels and unreliable memory accounting cause trouble. Every plan here is KVM, so the panel installs onto exactly the virtualisation its maintainers had in mind.

The smallest plan really is enough

A gigabyte and one core runs the panel with room left for a site or two. That makes this one of the cheapest ways to put a proper hosting stack, mail and DNS included, behind a domain you own.

Full root beneath the panel

Hestia configures Nginx, Apache, Bind and the mail stack directly, which only works when it owns the machine. KVM with real root gives it that, while leaving you free to reach past the panel when a config file needs a hand edit.

Resize when the sites outgrow the minimum

The recommended specification is four cores and 4 GB, which is a fair gap from the minimum. Start at the bottom while there is one site, then resize as the list grows rather than buying for a future you have not reached yet.
