What is Hermes Agent and what can it do?

Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent from Nous Research. You self-host it on a server, point it at any LLM you want (Nous Portal, OpenAI Codex, Anthropic, OpenRouter and many more) and connect it to your messaging apps so it can handle real tasks like replying to messages with context, automating workflows, running scheduled cron jobs and driving a browser. The learning loop watches what you do and writes new skills from patterns it spots over time.

Is Hermes Agent the same thing as OpenClaw?

No, they're separate projects. Both are open-source AI agents you can self-host and both connect to messaging apps with persistent memory, but the teams, codebases and skill systems are different. OpenClaw (formerly Moltbot) was built by Peter Steinberger. Hermes Agent is from Nous Research. Some people end up running both at different times, but they don't share data or skills directly.

Can I migrate from OpenClaw to Hermes

Yes. Hermes ships with a hermes claw migrate command that pulls in your OpenClaw skills, memory files, messaging gateway configs and (optionally) your API keys. Running it with --dry-run first lets you see what would move before anything actually does. Most users do the migration on a fresh Hermes install rather than over the top of an existing one.

Why should I run Hermes on a VPS instead of my own machine?

A laptop sleeps, restarts and loses its network connection, and Hermes works best as a long-running process. Messaging gateways need to stay logged in, scheduled cron jobs need a server that doesn't go offline at midnight and conversation memory grows more useful the longer the agent keeps running. A VPS gives you all of that for the price of a sandwich per month.

What VPS size do I need for Hermes Agent?

For light use (one or two messaging gateways, occasional CLI sessions) the 2 GB plan handles it without complaints. Running multiple subagents, heavy browser automation or several busy messaging gateways at once is more comfortable on the 4 GB or 8 GB plans. Hermes is lightweight by itself, so most of your monthly spend usually goes to LLM API calls rather than to server resources.

Do I need a GPU to run Hermes Agent?

Not for typical usage. Hermes is perfectly happy calling remote LLM APIs from a CPU-only VPS. You'd want a GPU VPS if you decide to run local models with Ollama or vLLM, either for privacy reasons or to skip API bills. Otherwise the standard EPYC plans cover it.

Which messaging platforms can I connect Hermes to?

A lot of them. Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, SMS, email, Matrix, Mattermost and Microsoft Teams all work through the messaging gateway, and Nous keeps adding more. WhatsApp specifically uses a Baileys-based bridge instead of the official Business API, so Nous recommends using a dedicated bot number for that one rather than your personal account.

How does Hermes Agent memory work?

Three layers. MEMORY.md and USER.md hold your long-term facts and preferences and get injected into every session as stable context. Skills are markdown files Hermes writes for itself after spotting a repeated pattern of successful tasks. Session history lives in a local SQLite database with FTS5 full-text search, so when you ask the agent about something from two weeks ago it can actually find it.

How much does it cost to run Hermes Agent on a VPS?

You can see the VPS prices on the product cards. LLM costs vary wildly depending on which provider you pick. A setup using free-tier Nous Portal, free Xiaomi MiMo or open-source models on OpenRouter can run almost nothing. A setup pointing at GPT-5 or Claude with heavy daily usage can easily hit $30-50/month in API spend. The /usage command inside Hermes shows your token burn in real time.

Can I run Hermes Agent on Windows?

Not natively. Hermes officially supports Linux, macOS and WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux). On a Windows desktop you'd install WSL2 first and then run Hermes inside it, which adds friction. Easier path: rent a Linux VPS where the Hermes template is preinstalled and skip WSL entirely.
