What's the difference between a dedicated server and bare metal?

In practice, the same thing. Dedicated server is the older term and bare metal is the modern one, and both describe a physical machine that runs your code without a hypervisor in the way. Some providers use "bare metal" to mean their unmanaged or newer-hardware tier, but at LumaDock the two words point at the same product: the whole server, no virtualisation layer, no shared cores.

How is a dedicated server different from a VPS?

A VPS is a slice of a physical server, shared with other tenants through a hypervisor. A dedicated server is the whole machine. Every core, every gigabyte of memory, every drive and the full 1 Gbps connection belongs to you, with nothing in between your code and the hardware. If your project has outgrown shared resources or runs anything sensitive to noisy neighbours, dedicated is the right tier.

When should I move from a VPS to a dedicated server?

The usual signals: CPU usage that's regularly maxed, databases that get slower under load, sustained traffic that bumps into the VPS plan's resource ceiling, or workloads where you can't risk a noisy neighbour stealing I/O. If you find yourself reaching for a bigger and bigger VPS every few months, a dedicated server usually works out cheaper and more predictable in the long run.

How fast can I get a dedicated server online?

Most orders are deployment-ready 10 to 45 minutes after payment confirms. Auto-provisioning handles imaging, network setup and IP allocation end-to-end, so you go straight from order to SSH credentials without anyone manually racking hardware. The servers are already in our datacenters waiting to be assigned, which is why the wait is in minutes rather than days.

Where are LumaDock's dedicated servers located?

Our primary dedicated server locations are London (UK), Frankfurt (Germany), Helsinki (Finland) and Bucharest (Romania), with more locations available depending on the configuration. The full list is shown live on the order page. Each site runs in a modern facility with redundant power, climate control and 24/7 on-site security.

Which location should I pick for my dedicated server?

Pick the region closest to where your traffic lives. Frankfurt sits at the heart of DE-CIX and gives you the lowest average latency across mainland Europe. London is the best pick for UK-focused projects and transatlantic routes. Helsinki is strong for Northern Europe and the Baltics. Bucharest covers Central and Eastern European traffic at a lower cost basis. For GDPR-bound projects, any of our EU locations works without ambiguity.

Do you offer GPU dedicated servers?

Yes. Our GPU servers are primarily located in Helsinki and Bucharest, with NVIDIA cards available across a range of profiles for AI training, machine learning inference, rendering and HPC. Like the rest of the fleet, the GPU is dedicated to your server with no virtualisation layer between your code and the hardware. Specific GPU models and availability are shown live on the order page.

Are LumaDock dedicated servers managed or unmanaged?

Unmanaged by default. You get root access from the moment provisioning finishes and you run the server the way you want, with no managed layer between you and the hardware. Our support team handles the underlying infrastructure (hardware faults, network, datacenter operations), and you handle the OS and everything above it. If you'd prefer a managed setup, talk to our team before you order and we'll work out an arrangement.

Which operating systems can I install?

The full Linux range (Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky, CentOS, Fedora, openSUSE, Arch and Alpine), FreeBSD, and more - plus Windows Server in evaluation mode (upgradeable to licensed). Custom ISO upload is supported for anything not on the default list, so if you need a specific kernel or a niche distro, just bring your own image.

Are there setup fees, contracts or hidden charges?

Absolutely not! We have no setup fees, no contracts and no surprises on the invoice. The monthly price you see on the order page is what you pay, and renewal pricing matches launch pricing. There are no bandwidth overage charges and no fine print that quietly raises the bill at month 13. Cancel at any time.

Can I get a refund if I change my mind?

Dedicated servers don't come with a money-back guarantee. Bare metal hardware is allocated specifically to your account the moment you order, and the imaging, network configuration and rack-level setup carry real costs we can't recover by pooling the server back into inventory the way we can with a VPS. This is the industry standard on bare metal.

Two things make this less risky than it sounds. First, there are no setup fees, so the worst case is one month of usage instead of a setup charge plus a month. Second, our team will help you spec the right server before you order, so you don't end up paying for a machine that's wrong for the job. If you're unsure which to pick, talk to us first.

If you want to test the network first, just deploy a regular VPS in the location where you want to order the dedicated server.
