You’ve seen the purple portal. You’ve mined obsidian. You’ve lit it with flint and steel. And now, it stares back at you.
That’s the Nether. Minecraft’s hot, hostile, lava-soaked second dimension, where everything wants to kill you and half of it can fly.
Let’s make sure your first visit doesn’t end with rage-quitting and a lifelong fear of fire.
What is the Nether, really?
It’s not just “Minecraft hell”, though it tries very hard to live up to the name. The Nether is:
- A separate dimension
- Full of unique mobs, biomes, and loot
- Required for potions, Netherite, and reaching the End
It’s also a vibe. Terrifying, chaotic, and strangely beautiful.
Step 1: How to build a Nether portal
To enter the Nether, you need a Nether portal:
-
Mine obsidian (at least 10 blocks)
- You need a diamond or netherite pickaxe
-
Build a rectangle
- Minimum size: 4 wide × 5 tall (corners optional)
- Light it with flint and steel
Stand inside, let the screen swirl, and boom. Welcome to the Nether.
Step 2: What to bring before you go
This is not a place to show up unprepared.
Pack smart:
- Diamond or iron armor
- Shield
- Plenty of food
- Blocks for bridges and cover
- Torches to mark paths
- Bow and arrows
- One gold armor piece (helmet is fine, keeps Piglins calm)
- Flint and steel in case your portal gets blown up
- Fire Resistance potion if you have one
Optional but very smart:
- Warped fungus on a stick for riding Striders
- Chest near your portal for backup gear
Step 3: Nether biomes and how scary they are
There are five main biomes, each trying to end your run in its own way.
Nether Wastes
Classic lava and netherrack. Ghasts everywhere. Familiar, but still dangerous.
Crimson Forest
Red trees, angry Piglins, and Hoglins that hit like trucks. Pretty, but brutal.
Warped Forest
Blue trees, calmer mobs, lots of Endermen. Safest biome. Set up camp here.
Soul Sand Valley
Slow movement, skeleton snipers, spooky atmosphere. Soul Speed helps a lot.
Basalt Deltas
Jagged terrain, lava everywhere, Magma Cubes bouncing at your face. Nightmare mode.
Step 4: Meet the mobs
Ghasts
Flying blobs that shoot fireballs.
Counter: Bow, or hit the fireballs back.
Piglins
Gold-obsessed mobs that attack if you’re not wearing gold.
Counter: Wear one gold item or barter with gold ingots.
Hoglins
Giant boars that charge on sight.
Counter: Hit hard and don’t get cornered.
Magma Cubes
Slimes, but spicy.
Counter: Keep your distance and clear the small ones fast.
Blazes
Floating fire mobs found in Nether Fortresses.
Counter: Fire resistance or a solid bow.
Step 5: Why the Nether matters
The Nether is required for real progression. It gives you:
- Blaze rods for brewing and Eyes of Ender
- Nether wart for potions
- Quartz for XP and builds
- Ancient debris for Netherite gear
- Blackstone and other unique blocks
You’ll also find:
- Bastions with dangerous Piglins and big loot
- Nether Fortresses with Blaze spawners and wart farms
Step 6: Staying alive
- Mark your portal clearly
- Dig through walls when terrain gets sketchy
- Don’t mine gold near Piglins
- Carry a respawn anchor if you stay long-term
- Avoid hitting Piglins accidentally. They never forgive.
Enter the chaos, so you can leave with glory
The Nether is dangerous, unpredictable, and hotter than your GPU. But it’s essential for Minecraft progression.
Go in prepared, stay calm, and remember: the warped forest is your safe zone.
