Fix common Miniconda errors: Command not found and more

Fix common Miniconda errors: Command not found and more

Each heading below carries an exact error string, so you can match your terminal output against the page and jump straight to the fix. Most of these have simple causes, a shell that was never initialized, an installer quirk, permissions damage left by sudo, and one of them, the terms-of-service gate, is recent enough that plenty of working pipelines met it as a surprise. If conda is not recognized after installing Miniconda, the first two sections are yours.

conda: command not found

You ran the installer on Linux or macOS, typed conda and got conda: command not found back. Two causes cover almost every case: either the installer never ran conda init (batch installs with the -b flag skip it on purpose), or it did run and you're still inside the old shell session, whose PATH predates the installer's edit to your rc file.

This fix works even when the shell knows nothing about conda, because it calls the activation script by its full path:

source ~/miniconda3/bin/activate
conda init

Close the terminal and open a new one, or reload in place with source ~/.bashrc on bash, source ~/.zshrc on zsh (the macOS default). The prompt should now begin with (base) and conda --version should answer. On a fresh server where you'd rather do the whole sequence from the top, download through first environment, the guide to install Miniconda on Ubuntu runs it end to end.

How to find the Miniconda path

The commands above assume the default prefix. If the installer was pointed elsewhere with -p, or someone else set the machine up, first confirm where Miniconda lives:

ls ~/miniconda3 ~/opt/miniconda3 /opt/miniconda3 2>/dev/null

Whichever of those shows bin and pkgs folders is your install. If none do, hunt for the conda binary across your home directory:

find $HOME -maxdepth 4 -name conda -path "*/bin/conda" 2>/dev/null

Take the folder two levels up from the hit (/home/dev/tools/miniconda3, not the bin/conda part), source its activation script from there and run conda init. From then on conda info --base prints the install path whenever you need it.

'conda' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

The Windows version of the same problem, with a twist: it's by design. The Miniconda installer keeps conda off the system PATH unless you tick the option it explicitly warns against, so a regular Command Prompt has never heard of the program. Nothing is broken.

The supported entry point is the Anaconda Prompt (miniconda3) shortcut in the Start Menu, which loads conda for that session, and from that prompt you can wire conda into your everyday terminals permanently:

conda init cmd.exe
conda init powershell

Run one or both, close every open terminal, reopen. PowerShell users sometimes meet a follow-up error where the new window refuses its profile because "running scripts is disabled on this system"; that's the execution policy blocking the profile script conda init just wrote, and allowing locally created scripts clears it:

Set-ExecutionPolicy -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Scope CurrentUser

The whole Windows setup, installer screens included, is in the guide to install Miniconda on Windows.

CondaToSNonInteractiveError: Terms of Service have not been accepted for the following channels

This one is recent, and it broke a lot of CI. Anaconda's updated Terms of Service took effect on July 15, 2025, and current Miniconda releases ship a plugin (conda-anaconda-tos) that enforces acceptance before conda touches the default channels. Interactively you get an accept/reject prompt; in a script or CI runner nobody is there to answer it, so conda raises:

CondaToSNonInteractiveError: Terms of Service have not been accepted for
the following channels. Please accept or remove them before proceeding:
    • https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/r

Accept the terms once per channel and the error stops:

conda tos accept --override-channels --channel https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/main
conda tos accept --override-channels --channel https://repo.anaconda.com/pkgs/r

Plain conda tos accept accepts everything at once, and CI can set CONDA_PLUGINS_AUTO_ACCEPT_TOS=yes in the environment instead; both forms are documented on Anaconda's ToS plugin page. Before pasting either into a company pipeline, understand that accepting binds you to Anaconda's repository terms, which carry a paid tier for organizations above 200 employees. Pointing conda at conda-forge instead of the default channels sidesteps the question entirely.

This package is incompatible with this version of macOS.

Mac users see this during the graphical .pkg install, followed by "The package is trying to install content to the system volume.", including on macOS versions the installer supports. Reports go back to the Ventura days, there's a r/learnpython thread collecting cases, and the workaround hasn't changed in all that time: skip the .pkg and use the shell installer, which unpacks into your home folder and never goes near the system volume.

curl -O https://repo.anaconda.com/miniconda/Miniconda3-latest-MacOSX-arm64.sh
bash Miniconda3-latest-MacOSX-arm64.sh

That's the Apple Silicon build; on an Intel Mac, swap arm64 for x86_64. The guide to install Miniconda on macOS covers the .sh route step by step, plus Homebrew as a third option.

Installer stuck at the license text with no prompt

You run the .sh installer, license text scrolls onto the screen, then nothing: no question, and typing yes achieves nothing either. The installer isn't stuck. Its license opens in a pager, the same program behind man pages, and the pager is waiting for you silently. Enter or Space scrolls through, q exits immediately, and only then does the real prompt appear so that typing yes continues the install. Enough people hit this that it has its own threads, including a r/SteamDeck one where the entire answer is those two keystrokes.

For scripted installs the question never comes up, since batch mode skips the license screen: bash Miniconda3-latest-Linux-x86_64.sh -b accepts it and installs without a single prompt.

NotWritableError: The current user does not have write permissions to a required path.

This appears on the first conda install or conda create after an install that involved sudo somewhere along the way. Root now owns part of the tree, either the install prefix or the ~/.conda folder that a single sudo'd conda command can leave behind, and your user can't write there. Hand it back:

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER ~/miniconda3 ~/.conda

Adjust the paths if conda lives elsewhere (the find command near the top of this page locates it). Longer term, the habit to build is never feeding Miniconda sudo at all: it's designed to live entirely inside your home directory, neither the installer nor conda ever needs elevation, and each sudo creates more root-owned files that resurface later. Ownership tangled beyond one chown is the point where I'd stop untangling, remove everything properly, the uninstall Miniconda guide has the reverse-init and leftover dotfiles, and rerun the installer as your own user.

Questions?

Why does my prompt show (base) in every new terminal now?

That's conda's auto activation, on by default after conda init. conda config --set auto_activate false turns it off; older conda versions call the key auto_activate_base, which still works as an alias. Environments behave the same either way, you just activate them by name when needed.

About the author

Alice Langley

I got my first writing work through open-source projects. Before anybody paid me, I was the person rewriting installation notes, answering the same question in Discord for the 25th time and fixing READMEs because the instructions were driving me mad. I was studying then and honestly didn't know technical writing was a job.

But now it's MY job: mostly tutorials, occasionally docs, KBs, sometimes editing. I work freelance. The non-computer part of my life is fairly crowded. I make cosplay costumes and props (sewing is the bit I'm best at, wigs are a different story for now), watch a lot of horror films and have recently started learning bookbinding from somebody who is much more patient than I am.
