Miniconda vs Miniforge: Channels and licensing compared

Miniconda vs Miniforge: Channels and licensing compared

From a distance Miniconda and Miniforge look interchangeable: two minimal conda installers of a few hundred megabytes each, both leaving you with the same working conda in your shell. Nearly all of the practical difference sits in one line of .condarc, the channel conda consults when you don't name one, and that single line determines which repository your packages come from and, past a certain company size, who has to pay for the privilege.

What each installer puts on disk

Miniconda is Anaconda's official minimal installer: conda, Python and their dependencies, preconfigured for Anaconda's defaults channels at repo.anaconda.com. Since version 24.9.2 the installer writes a .condarc naming those channels explicitly, so the tie to Anaconda's repository exists from your first conda install onward. (Anyone weighing the full 9.7 GB distribution against these minimal installers is asking the Miniconda vs Anaconda question instead.)

Miniforge is the community equivalent, maintained by the conda-forge project under a BSD 3-Clause license. It installs the same conda plus mamba, with conda-forge configured as the default and only channel, and nothing in a Miniforge install ever contacts Anaconda's repository unless you add it yourself.

Default channels in Miniconda and Miniforge

A channel is where conda looks for packages. Anaconda's defaults channels are a curated repository the company builds, hosts and licenses commercially; conda-forge is a community channel with a much larger package count, free at any organization size. Identical software, then, pointed at two different repositories. Day to day you won't feel the difference. It surfaces the day someone in legal or procurement asks where the company's Python packages come from.

Licensing for companies over 200 employees

Anaconda's terms require a paid plan for organizations above 200 employees or contractors, counted across the whole organization including affiliates, and as of August 2026 that's the active threshold. In practice it means a developer at such a company who runs a default Miniconda install is pulling commercially licensed packages within the hour, having chosen nothing. Miniforge can't produce that situation, since it never resolves against repo.anaconda.com in the first place. The thresholds, the carve-outs and the .condarc detail behind all this have their own article, is Miniconda free for commercial use.

Universities and HPC centers now recommend Miniforge

The institutional shift is well underway, and it's not subtle. The University at Buffalo's SENS guide to conda recommends Miniforge outright, notes that Miniconda falls under the same terms of service as Anaconda and states that SENS does not support installing Miniconda at all. Research computing groups across the US and Europe have published near-identical guidance, most of it dated after Anaconda's 2024 terms update. A university IT department refusing to support the vendor's official installer is a fairly loud signal about where the safe default now sits.

Does Miniforge include mamba?

Yes, since release 23.3.1 in August 2023, which bundled mamba alongside conda and incidentally killed the separate Mambaforge variant (more in the FAQ). mamba is the alternative client, historically the fast one for large dependency solves. You can keep typing conda and never notice it's there, then reach for mamba the day a big solve drags.

The Homebrew cask conflict

On macOS, Homebrew packages both installers as casks and declares them conflicting: brew install --cask miniconda refuses to run alongside the miniforge cask, and switching means removing one before adding the other. So on a brew-managed Mac this choice gets made once, at install time. Whichever side you land on, the cask's caveat is identical, run conda init "$(basename "${SHELL}")" afterwards so your shell picks conda up.

Migrate from Miniconda to Miniforge

Your environments survive the move. Export each one first:

conda env list
conda env export -n project1 > project1.yml

Repeat for every environment worth keeping, then open each file and change defaults to conda-forge in the channels section, without which the recreate step pulls from the repository you're trying to leave. Remove the old install following the uninstall Miniconda steps, install Miniforge from its GitHub releases, and rebuild:

conda env create -f project1.yml

Pin-level exports sometimes fail across channels, because build strings differ between defaults and conda-forge. When conda env create chokes on one, re-export with conda env export --from-history, which records only the packages you asked for by name and lets the solver pick fresh builds on the other side. The broader environment workflow, exports included, is in creating environments in Miniconda.

Which one should you install?

A solo developer or a small team that's content with the defaults channel loses nothing by staying on Miniconda, since below 200 employees the licensing question doesn't reach you. Anywhere licensing is a live question at all, a growing company, a university, an enterprise with affiliates nobody can enumerate, install Miniforge and stop thinking about it. I'd add one more case from experience: teams that expect to grow. Moving fifty laptops off defaults later is tedious enough that starting on conda-forge is worth it even before the threshold is close.

Questions?

Do I have to reinstall if I'm still on Mambaforge?

Yes, treat it as end of life. Mambaforge was deprecated in July 2024 and retired in January 2025, once regular Miniforge started shipping mamba itself. Environments migrate to Miniforge3 the same way they would from Miniconda: export, reinstall, recreate.

About the author

Matteo De Luca

I am from Turin. I studied electronic engineering there and discovered, somewhere during the second year, that I enjoyed explaining our laboratory work more than I enjoyed the laboratory work itself. I wrote for small Italian technology sites during university, then took freelance assignments on consumer hardware and later Linux and server software. The second change was better for me. I like subjects where there is something concrete to understand before the writing begins.

I live with my girlfriend and a very old Syberian cat. I go bouldering two evenings a week and draw when I remember to. I also have a small collection of film cameras inherited from my grandfather. Photography is one of the few hobbies where I am quite happy not to become more efficient. I don't want every interest I have to become work.
