Why self-host Dokploy instead of paying a platform

Dokploy is a deployment platform you run yourself, built as an open source answer to Vercel, Netlify and Heroku. Connect a repository and it builds, deploys and keeps the certificate current through Traefik. Databases sit beside the applications, with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, MariaDB and Redis managed from the same dashboard and backed up to external storage on a schedule.

Docker Swarm does the orchestration, which is what separates it from the simpler deployment tools. A single server behaves as a one-node cluster, so replica counts and rolling updates work from the first deploy. Adding a second machine later is a join rather than a migration. Commercial platforms bill by build minutes, bandwidth and seats. Here the cost is the server, so a heavy release week changes nothing on the invoice.

Who self-hosts Dokploy

A self-hosted alternative to Vercel or Heroku

The workflow is the one you already know: connect the repository, set the environment variables and push. What changes is where the build runs and who bills you for it. Static sites, APIs and full applications all sit on the same server.

Both do the same job well. Both run in our one-click library. The short version is that Dokploy leans on Docker Swarm for orchestration, while Coolify has the longer integration list and the bigger community. We wrote the long version in Coolify vs Dokploy.

Dokku is lighter and lives on the command line, which suits people who want a Heroku-style git push and nothing more. Dokploy gives you a dashboard, managed databases and multi-node support, at the cost of running a heavier stack. Pick on interface first, since both deploy reliably.

Compose support is native, so an existing stack deploys without being rewritten into someone else's format. If you would rather stay closer to the runtime itself, a Docker VPS gives you the same machine without the platform on top.

Spinning up Postgres next to the application it serves removes a monthly line item and a network hop. Backups run on a schedule to external storage, which is the part people usually postpone until the week they need it.

Swarm is already there, so the second server joins the cluster rather than starting a migration. Services spread across nodes with the same dashboard in front of them, while private networking keeps that traffic off the public internet.
