Why self-host Firefly III for your personal finances
Firefly III is a free, open-source personal finance manager, built and maintained by James Cole and licensed under the AGPL. It keeps your money in double-entry books, so every transaction moves an amount between two accounts and your balances always reconcile. Budgets, categories and tags organise the spending, piggy banks track savings goals and bills are predicted before they land, in any currency you hold.
There is no hosted version from the project, so a self-hosted Firefly III runs wherever you put it, and your full transaction history goes with it. On a VPS that history sits in the zone you pick, available from any browser and exportable whenever you want it out. Firefly III is built for personal and household finances; its own documentation says business bookkeeping and payroll are outside its scope.
