Immich is a self-hosted photo and video service built to do the job Google Photos or iCloud does now. The mobile apps back up your camera roll in the background while the server sorts what arrives into a timeline you can scroll by year, with albums, shared links and per-user accounts on top.
It's AGPL licensed and backed by FUTO, so both the code and the originals stay in your hands. Face recognition and smart search run on your own machine rather than someone else's, which means the index of who appears in which picture never leaves the server you rent. There's no storage tier to hit either. You add disk when the library asks for it.
Type a person's name or a word like beach and the index finds the shots.
Background backup runs while you shoot, then clears the originals off the phone.
Point Immich at photos already sitting on disk and it reads them where they are.
