What Plesk gives you on a VPS

Plesk is a hosting control panel. Domains, mailboxes, databases, DNS and certificates all sit behind one login. The WordPress Toolkit handles installs, cloning, staging and mass updates across every site on the server. It runs on Linux and on Windows, which is usually what decides it against the alternatives.

The licence is a separate purchase from Plesk, priced by edition according to how many domains you host. Our template installs the panel and leaves the key to you, so an agency changing servers carries across the licence it already owns and pays no markup on top. Underneath it all sits an ordinary KVM VPS with full root, so anything the panel doesn't expose is still yours to do from the shell.

Who runs Plesk on a VPS

Moving an existing Plesk server

The migrator built into the panel pulls subscriptions, mail and databases from your old machine over SSH, which covers most moves without a manual dump. Your existing licence transfers with you, so the only new line on the bill is the server itself.

Plesk is the practical choice when the stack needs IIS, ASP.NET or MSSQL, since the alternatives are Linux-only. Worth knowing there are two licences in play on a Windows VPS: the panel comes from Plesk, while Windows Server ships as an evaluation copy that you licence yourself.

Service plans, subscriptions and customer logins are built into the panel, so each client sees their own sites and nothing else. Set the limits once and new accounts inherit them.

WP Toolkit is the reason a lot of agencies stay on Plesk. Security hardening applies across every install at once, staging copies take a click and Smart Updates screenshot a site before and after an update so you can see what a plugin bump broke.

Stay with Plesk if you already know it or need Windows. If you're picking a panel fresh, look at ispmanager first, since it covers the same ground at roughly 70% less than cPanel and we're an official partner. cPanel makes sense mainly when a client or a migration insists on it.

Full root sits underneath it, so a custom PHP build, an extra service or a cron job the panel has no field for is still straightforward. The panel manages what it manages and stays out of the way of the rest.
