Download and install SQL Server on Windows Server

Updated and tested 17 October 2026

The installer is the straightforward half of this. Work through the wizard and you end up with a running instance. The download page is where it goes wrong, because several buttons say some version of "free" and they mean different things once you are in production, and you find out which one you picked during a licence review.

Which download first, then the wizard in outline, then the unattended command line for building more than one machine, then the post-install steps the wizard does not do for you.

Which mssql download you need

The Microsoft mssql download page lists the free editions. Standard and Enterprise are bought through volume licensing or a cloud subscription and there is no button for them. You download mssql server media once and that same ISO installs any of them. Edition is decided by the product key or by the edition you choose during setup, which is why an Evaluation install can be converted later without reinstalling anything.

Developer edition

Full Enterprise functionality, no cost, licensed for development and test only. That last clause is the whole story: run Developer on a machine that serves real users and you are out of compliance, however small the database is. The downloads page now splits it into a Standard flavour and an Enterprise flavour, which is new and catches people who last downloaded it a few years ago. Pick the flavour matching the edition you intend to buy for production, otherwise your dev box has features your production box will not.

Express edition

Free for production, with limits. Compute is capped at the lesser of one socket or four cores, the buffer pool is capped at 1,410 MB per instance and the maximum size of a single relational database moved from 10 GB to 50 GB in SQL Server 2025. The full comparison of Express and Developer covers what each one costs you in the other direction. Most of what you will read online still says 10 GB, so the 50 GB figure bears repeating. It makes Express a reasonable choice for a small line-of-business app, though the memory ceiling bites long before the size ceiling does.

Evaluation edition

Enterprise functionality on a timer. It is what I install when I am proving something works before anyone signs a purchase order, and the edition upgrade path in setup converts it to a licensed edition in place. Keep the complete edition and component matrix open while you decide. Standard's limits moved in 2025 to the lesser of 4 sockets or 32 cores and a 256 GB buffer pool.

Run the installation wizard

To install mssql server on Windows you mount the ISO, run setup.exe and land in the SQL Server Installation Center. The path through it is short. Installation, then "New SQL Server standalone installation", then the licence terms, then your edition or product key, then the Feature Selection page. Database Engine Services is the only feature most installs need, and everything else adds services you then have to patch.

Two pages take more than a click-through. Instance Configuration decides default versus named. Database Engine Configuration sets the authentication mode, the sysadmin accounts and, on the Data Directories tab, where your data and log files land. Moving those later is tedious, so it is the screen to slow down on.

One documented warning catches people installing on a remote machine. Setup run from local client media over a Remote Desktop session can fail, and the installation guide recommends media local to the target machine or on a network share. Copy the ISO across first.

Unattended install with setup.exe

Once you've built the same box twice, do it from the command line. Microsoft's own example, verbatim from the command prompt install reference:

setup.exe /q /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQL /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /SQLSVCACCOUNT="<DomainName\UserName>" /SQLSVCPASSWORD="<password>" /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="<DomainName\UserName>" /AGTSVCACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE" /SQLSVCINSTANTFILEINIT="True" /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS

What the ones that matter are doing:

  • /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS is required. Setup won't proceed without it in unattended mode.
  • /FEATURES takes a comma-delimited list with no spaces, drawn from SQLEngine, Replication, FullText, AS, RS, IS, Conn, Tools, PolyBase and a few others. SQL is the shorthand parent that pulls in the engine and its children.
  • /INSTANCENAME is MSSQLSERVER for a default instance, anything else for a named one.
  • /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS provisions the sysadmin logins and is required for every non-Express edition. Forget it and setup fails a rule check rather than silently installing something you can't administer.
  • /SECURITYMODE=SQL turns on mixed mode, and /SAPWD is mandatory whenever you pass it.
  • /Q is fully silent, /QS shows progress with no interaction and /Q wins if you pass both.

Notice what Microsoft's example does not include: /SECURITYMODE. That install comes out in Windows Authentication mode. The engine-only mixed-mode equivalent, composed from the same parameter table, is this:

setup.exe /Q /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLENGINE /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTIN\Administrators" /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD="<StrongPassword>" /TCPENABLED=1 /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS

/TCPENABLED=1 switches on the TCP/IP protocol at install time. Without it, a fresh install accepts local connections and refuses every remote one, and the fix afterwards is Configuration Manager plus a service restart.

Default instance or named instance

A default instance listens on TCP 1433 and clients reach it as Server=hostname. A named instance gets a dynamic TCP port chosen at service start, so clients cannot guess it and they ask the SQL Server Browser service on UDP 1434 to look it up.

The Browser has to be running and UDP 1434 has to be open on the firewall for that lookup to work. When either is untrue the client reports "SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26, Error Locating Server/Instance Specified" with no further detail, and error 26 is a named instance problem exclusively. A default instance on 1433 never involves the Browser at all.

Install a default instance unless you are putting several on one machine. If you need a named one, pin it to a static port in Configuration Manager and connect with the port written out, as host\INSTANCE,1435, which skips the Browser lookup. The same port change works on a default instance in exactly the same way.

Post-install: mixed mode, TCP/IP and file locations

If you skipped /SECURITYMODE, switch to mixed authentication now. In SSMS: right-click the server, Properties, the Security page, then Server authentication. Restart the service afterwards. The T-SQL route does the same job:

EXECUTE xp_instance_regwrite N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', N'Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer', N'LoginMode', REG_DWORD, 2;

LoginMode 2 is mixed and 1 is Windows only. The change does not take effect until the service restarts. Microsoft documents both routes on the server authentication mode page, along with enabling the sa login, which is disabled after a Windows-auth install.

TCP/IP lives in SQL Server Configuration Manager. It comes from the SQL Server media, SSMS does not install it, and newer versions of Windows might not list it as an app. It is an MMC snap-in: run SQLServerManager17.msc for SQL Server 2025 or SQLServerManager16.msc for 2022, from C:\Windows\SysWOW64\. Then SQL Server Network Configuration, Protocols for your instance, and enable TCP/IP if setup did not. Restart the service.

Check the service account while you are in there. The per-service virtual account the wizard picks is right for a standalone box, and a domain account only becomes necessary when the engine has to reach a file share. Grant "Perform volume maintenance tasks" to the engine account if you did not pass /SQLSVCINSTANTFILEINIT="True", since instant file initialization turns a slow data file growth into a near-instant one.

Where the SQL Server error log lives on Windows

When something fails, this file has the answer and the Windows Event Log usually does not. The path follows the instance and the major version:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL17.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log\ERRORLOG

MSSQL17 is SQL Server 2025 and MSSQL16 is 2022, matching the internal version numbers: 2019 is 15.x, 2022 is 16.x, 2025 is 17.x. The second half of the folder name is the instance, so a named instance called SQL2 gives you MSSQL17.SQL2. On Windows the file is plain text, so open it with anything.

Login failures in particular only make sense here. The client is always shown State 1 regardless of what went wrong, and the real state number appears only in this log. Setup writes its own logs elsewhere, under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\<version>\Setup Bootstrap\Log\, and Summary.txt in that folder is the first file to read after a failed installation.

Installing SQL Server on a Windows VPS

On a Windows Server VPS the operating system and the database are licensed separately. Whatever covers Windows on the machine, SQL Server needs its own licence, or one of the free editions above. A Windows licence has never covered the database.

Two practical notes for a VPS install. Size the RAM before you install, because SQL Server on Windows will consume everything you give it and max server memory is one of the first settings to change on a small box. And get the ISO onto the machine before you start, for the Remote Desktop media reason above. Does an ISO on a network share behave the same across a provider network? No idea. Copy the file to the machine and the question never comes up.

If none of the Windows tooling is what you are after, the same engine runs on Linux with a smaller footprint and no licensing difference. SQL Server on Ubuntu 24.04 is four commands and SQL Server in a Docker container is one. Management stays on Windows either way, since SSMS is Windows-only, so you will want a workstation with SQL Server Management Studio installed whatever the server itself runs.

Questions?

Can I install SQL Server 2019 on Windows Server 2022 or 2025?

Yes, Microsoft supports SQL Server 2019 on both, from the RTM build onward. The support matrix for SQL Server on Windows also lists SQL Server 2022 and 2025 as supported on Windows Server 2025. Apply the latest cumulative update straight after setup, since the RTM build is only the minimum the matrix accepts.
