OpenCode is an open source coding agent that works from a terminal, a desktop app, an editor extension or a browser. It is model agnostic by design, so the same agent runs against Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or a local model you serve yourself, with more than 75 providers supported. Skills, subagents, language server integration and shareable session links all come with it, and an AGENTS.md file teaches it your conventions. The project is MIT licensed and maintained by Anomaly, the group that grew out of SST.
The reason a server suits it is the architecture. Running 'opencode serve' starts a headless instance with an HTTP API, and a terminal or a browser attaches to that instance afterwards. Your laptop becomes a window rather than the machine doing the work. Close the lid and the task carries on, then reconnect from somewhere else and the session is exactly where you left it. Scripts can fire a prompt at the same instance over the API without a person sitting there at all.
